Sustainability
Eco-labels are an important part of a well-round sustainable sourcing program
They are particularly useful with vetting imported seafood as the fishery or aquaculture facility is evaluated individually, especially when importing from a country without a fishery/aquaculture management program in place.
The largest supermarket chains and food groups in the US and Europe rely upon eco-labels to provide transparency and information to their customers.
Chefs, purchasers, diners, and consumers alike feel confident in purchasing a certified sustainable seafood because of their transparent standards and ease of confirmation.
At American Fish and Seafood, we want to offer our clients the products that will best suit their own sourcing policy goals, so we’ve incorporated products certified by the below eco-labels:
In addition to looking to eco-labels to verify the sustainability of an imported product, our purchasing team also works with Seafood for the Future to interpret UN FAO data on foreign fisheries and utilizes the WWF cards for relaying the information in an easy-to-understand manner
American Fish and Seafood supports domestic suppliers and encourages their clients to source domestically as part of their sustainable seafood policy. We promote the use of NOAA’s FishWatch site among our suppliers, employees, and clients.
We also firmly support NOAA/NMFS fishery management programs and the domestic fisheries they regulate. In an effort to champion domestic aquaculture and promote the recent NOAA Aquaculture Standards release, American Fish and Seafood proudly purchases domestically and responsibly farmed catfish, oysters, redfish, steelhead, hybrid striped bass, sturgeon, mussels, and scallops. We purchase mussels and oysters from the Carlsbad Aquafarm in Carlsbad, CA and from several Sturgeon farms in Northern California to actively promote local aquaculture.
